Helsinki’s summer season off to a flying start
The centenary year’s summer season gets off to a flying start in the capital region of Finland. 100 horses are taking over Kaivopuisto Park, 40 different saunas are brought to Töölö and Helsinki’s birthday is stretched into a two-day-long celebration with hundreds of free events.
Horses at Kaivopuisto Park event brings over 100 horses and the first ever harness racing event in Helsinki from 20 to 21 May. The event for the whole family consists of show jumping and racing competitions. Also, this is the place to spot ponies, Finnish and Icelandic horses and visit a petting zoo. In addition, the event marks the 110th anniversary of the Finnhorse.
Head to the Kaivopuisto Park again on 9 June to see a huge Air Show, organised by the Finnish Aviation Museum. Various aircraft types representing the past, present and future of Finnish aviation will take part in the show, which will take place in the air, land and sea. Special guest stars of the show are the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, one of the world’s premier aerobatic display teams.
Party theme: Finland 100
Once again, a fresh breeze from Brazil will blow over the streets of Helsinki, as samba dance schools are competing for the Finnish samba championship 9-10 June. On Saturday, 10 June, Esplanade fills with dancers and musicians in flamboyant costumes, and with fabulous carnival carriages. This year’s Helsinki Samba Carnaval’s theme is Finland 100.
In honour of the Finland 100 centenary year, Helsinki’s birthday will be celebrated over two days in 2017: on 11 and 12 June. Hundreds of free events will be held throughout the city and its local districts on Helsinki Day, promising something for everyone. For example, enjoy a dinner under the sky, coffee at the Mayor’s office or attend a big concert at Töölönlahti Bay Park or communal Finland 100 singing event at Music Hall.
The parade of the Finnish Defence Forces will be arranged on 4 June in Helsinki. The day consists of a parade show, which goes along Mannerheimintie. Later in the evening there’s a Suomi 100 summer tour concert and arsenal exhibition at Kansalaistori Square. Navy’s vessels are on show at Eteläsatama and the Finnish air force will give an air show over Kaivopuisto Park.
International guests and football matches
Finland is honoured to have high-ranking guests on 1 June when the Nordic heads of state will arrive in Helsinki to celebrate the centenary of Finland’s independence. President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Mrs Jenni Haukio will be the hosts for the day.
In 2017 Finland celebrates 100 years of independence while 2018 marks a century since Estonia declared its freedom. The celebrations are about to climax on 10 June when 100 football, futsal and beach soccer matches will take place in Southern Finland and Estonia. The matches are played in a friendly atmosphere and the scores are counted tongue-in-cheek to see which country gets more points in total.
