Finland 100 centenary year is here! The Finland 100 Grand Opening brought together over 130,000 people in Helsinki. At midnight 100,000 revellers gathered for New Year’s Eve celebrations at Kansalaistori Square and Töölönlahti Bay. Despite the huge crowd, the grand opening went smoothly in a good atmosphere.
“Staging the event called for major efforts involving over one thousand people and over 300 performers – my heartfelt thanks to all of them! The general mood in the grand opening reflected the profound enthusiasm with which we Finns have embraced our centennial year. We’ve now launched this fabulous year on the chosen theme of Together and I’m convinced that a lot of other memorable events lie ahead,” says Ossi Luoto, the chief producer of the Finland 100 Grand Opening.
The main stage at Kansalaistori Square was 16 metres high and nearly the size of an ice hockey rink. The show included hundreds of performers and the culminated in a fireworks show. 100,000 revellers gathered at Kansalaistori Square and Töölönlahti Bay at midnight.
The start of the Finland 100 centenary year was celebrated all around Finland and abroad on New Year’s Eve.
The Finnish Broadcasting Company provided live coverage of the celebrations to Finland and abroad on TV1, Yle Areena and Radio Suomi. The Party of the New Century at Kansalaistori attracted audiences all over the world, especially from Europe and North America. The direct broadcast reached altogether 1,661,000 viewers (Finnpanel). The Finland 100 Grand Opening in Helsinki was arranged in cooperation with Finland 100 secretariat, the city of Helsinki, Yle and a large crowd of local operators around Töölönlahti Bay.
