Tired of male voice classics? At the centennial of the Republic of Finland, The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki would like to serve up something new and different. Fåglarna – the Birds – is more than a concert.
Borne aloft by the video art of Magnus Wikström, this grand production makes both nature and the human lifeworld resonate as one, creating a world where the simple cuckoo can coexist with the mythical Phoenix-bird. The journey crosses space and genre: from the Amazon rain forest to the Latvian plains in springtime, over the sands of Arabia and into the shade of Japanese cherry blossoms. Jazz, primitivism and choral improvisation share the scene – experience never-before heard works by Yui Katada and Teemu Tommola, as well as the fantastic music of Esa Pietilä, Pēteris Vasks and Erik Bergman.
